My Research

My primary areas of specialization are interpersonal and mediated communication. More specifically, I am interested in communication surrounding sexual activity or within mediated sexual settings that demonstrate how individuals construct and communicate their online experiences. I aim to discover how mediated intimate interpersonal communication about identity, sex, sexuality, and gender in the media can be seen through a feminist lens.

By using interpretive and quantitative methodologies, I have gathered rich data to unearth intimate stories, which can be supplemented through numerical data. My specialty is thematic analysis, which I use to organize, interpret, and report surveys, interviews, focus groups, and oral history data. I also have training in quantitative methodologies and analyses, specifically in the context of survey research.

Selected Student Feedback

“Loved Camden and this course. She was very approachable, encouraging, and gave creative freedom. I would change my major to CMI if I wasnt so late into my TTU career! Gave opportunities for every interest.”

“Wonderful lectures, and an even more wonderful professor! Its so refreshing and motivating to have a professor who is actually passionate about the topic theyre teaching. Days in class were almost never boring, and her presentations were top notch!!! #canvaqueen”

“Professor Smith is incredibly knowledged in ethnicity, race and gender in the media. I loved how she connected the class with her own research and opened my eyes to so many new concepts. Using discussion boards and reflection papers helped teach me more about the class content than any quiz would have.”

“Enjoyed this class and liked having a professor who worked beside you and understood mental health importance and course work struggle, while still setting boundaries to show us how to push through our work.”
